Hello, hello! It has been… Dang three months since my last update! Time flies and it has been a busy Summer.
Going to jump straight into it, the second book in my five book series released on May 29th, 2019. Makes me wonder if I should have waited until tomorrow to post this update, wait I need to focus. All joking aside, the release did better than I expected. I only opened per-orders 3 weeks before launch and actually had some! That was a nice surprise considering I announced the initial release date on May 10th before changing it to May 29th.
Whether people are liking the sequel or not is another story, nonetheless, the story must go on! Upon releasing the second book, I finished the outline for the third in July. I’ll be honest and say I was a very lazy boy for most of July and the first week of August. I have been writing, just not as much as I have wanted to.
Then something happened. On August 6th, 2019 I wrote a lot. More than I normally do in one day and I felt like I was writing some good scenes. I was really happy with how it turned out. Now before I go into what happened, I have a short backstory.
I bought a new SSD (Solid State Drive for you non tech nerds) and installed a new version of Windows 10. I downloaded my copy of Office 2016, but I hadn’t put in my new office 2016 CD key that I had just bought. So after I finished writing for the night, I saved the file and decided I would put in the CD key. That’s fine, I put the CD key and activate the copy. My mistake was that I hadn’t closed out of the book I had just saved. Somehow when activating Word, I went to close it and it said “Do you want to save your word document?” I thought I did but figured it couldn’t hurt to click yes.
That was my mistake. It overwrote my book with a blank word file. I couldn’t restore it through word, no auto backups and I had just lost all progress on my 3rd book. Well not really, see I do keep a separate backup on the cloud. I never thought I would need it but boy am I glad I did. I still lost all the work I put in that night and a few days (I had forgotten to backup that week). In total I lost about 2 chapters worth of writing and I was furious, yet thankful.
You might ask, Tyler, how could you be thankful for this? Well first, it reaffirmed my belief that having a backup on the cloud is smart. I also backup every night once I finish writing, so if I ever have that problem again, I will not have lost anything, at worst whatever I wrote that night.
The second and I would say more important factor, it motivated the hell out of me. I don’t know why, but I have been writing like a madman ever since. To give you perspective, I usually write 500-1k words a night. 1k on a good night, 500 on average. Ever since that night I have been writing 2000-5000 words a day. I am crushing this third book and I love it. I plan on keeping that 2k word minimum a day for as long as I can.
In a weird way I am very grateful for that mistake due to how much it motivated me. It made me realize that if I could keep that up, I could get my first draft done much sooner than normal (1-2 months instead of 6-7) and get an earlier release date. I am not going to promise that, I know how that went last time and am going to wait until I send it to my editor before announcing a date.
To be honest this third book is the one I have been looking forward to writing and dreading before I even began writing the first book. We’ll see if readers enjoy it when I release, but that is what I feel on this particular book.
Anyway I now have a more streamlined backup every night and I recommend any other writers do the same. Losing some work sucks, but I can’t imagine losing all of it. If I lost all my progress I would have quit writing for a couple of weeks, probably.
I have been lazy in updating and I apologize for that. With work, writing, Summer vacations and trying to get exposure for the first book, it has made me lazy when it comes to updating this blog. I will try my hardest to provide an update, along with some other discussions on the next one in October. For now this is my update so far!
Hope to see you all on the next update and have a great week!
